Thanks Rocky - glad you are enjoying them - this is a superb livery and I think one of Gaetan's most attractive packs.

I love those GP-18
Amost as much as I love the GN GP-20s. Are we ever going to see GN GP-20s ??? I am very sure that the cab interior must be very close to the GP-18s cab interior and I know that GN used multiple GP-20s to pull freight. Let me see if I have a screen shot of the new NP pack on the RMD route .... Well not any real good shots yet, mostly the North Coast Limited so far. I'll have to run the route and shoot a few, then I'll post them Rocky |

Rocky,
Most GP20s have low short hoods, which is a different cabview. I'm not sure Gaetan has a low short hood cabview for EMD (he does for Alco).

The GN GP-20s WERE high hood units. I believe there were other RRs that had them also, UP I think was one. If Southern had them they would be too. I just have to get some GN GP-20s. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Perhaps there could be a GN frieght pack 2 With GP-20s, GP-35s, U25Bs and perhaps some other frieght cars. I will have to go and look for some other frieght cars that would work. The GP-35s cab must be quite similar to the GP-38. Not sure about the U25B though. Perhaps if you develope the EMD switch locos - ie. SW-12/1200, NW-2, etc. they could be added to the pack too. Let me see if I could find some other good GN frieght cars to add.
Thanks,
Rocky |

Hi David,
Doesn't the GP20 run the 567? Wouldn't the standard EMD sounds work?

The GP20 was the first turbo-charged 567, so it would sound quite different from a regular Geep.
The turbochargers installed in the GP20 were troublesome and had a tendancy to explode. A friend of ours saw the pieces come right through the roof of a GP20 when the turbocharger exploded. Since the turbocharger only brought an additional 200 HP compared to a GP18, and since it was so troublesome, the GP20 became very unpopular on most roads (but not the Santa Fe). It didn't help that EMD came out with the GP38 which gave similar performance but without a turbocharger. In fact, the Penn Central removed the turbochargers from their former NYC GP20s and installed 645 power assemblies, and were able to keep the same horsepower rating.
Since the GP20 was gone earlier than most Geeps, it may be difficult to find good quality recordings.

I'm not sure about PC pulling the turbos from NYC's GP20s. While serving their short stint on Conrail, they were still turbo charged. Listening to the restored WP GP20 at Portola CA, they sound almost identical to a GP30/GP35 with a slightly more pronounced turbo whine (mostly due in part to the absolute lack of any exhaust silencing.) The GP38 also came out four years after the GP20 production had ended, so I don't believe that was a contributing cause to the demise of the GP20. Yes, they had turbo charger problems, but like you said, they were EMDs first attempt at a turbo charged unit. UP did have a few high-nose GP20s, as those were the very first "GP20s" ever made. UP built them in-house from older GP7s. Any low nosed GP20s on the UP were ones purchased from EMD when they started producing them. _________________ Thom |
