Here is an FYI. Back in the 80's and around that period of time, the DM&IR would lease out some of their motive power during the Winter months when Lake Superior would freeze over. You could see DM&IR SD18's pulling coal trains on the L&N, single units in consist with BN units on freights or running on the C&NW in the Midwest. You don't need a DM&IR route to put those units to work......although a route wouldn't be a bad idea.
