Passenger EOT or FRED

After downloading the SP Passenger Set, I got out a copy of _Southern Pacific Passenger Train Consists and Car, 1955-1958, by Harry Stegmaier. I found that using the cars and the Lark Gray bonus cars I had enough cars to reproduce any number of SP passenger trains for both Cascade Crossing and Cajon routes. And, I'm anticipating a Coast Line route which will allow me to run the Daylight and the Lark. BTW a few SP heavyweight and lightweight baggage/mail storage cars, some REA and a couple of RPO's to produce Trains 90/91, Sad Sam. http://www.wx4.org/to/foam/sp/san_jose/long_haul/mail/mail.html

SP had bad experiences with observation cars and tended to favor Blunts which could be used in interior positions on trains as well as on the ends.

By the 60's they were running all kinds of consists, many terminated by regular cars with the rear doors locked and the expandable gates pulled closed. On those gates they hung a red light, in many cases a Gyralight. Since my return to MSTS I've seen any number of EOT devices that can be added to caboose-less freight consists. I know lots of railroads, esp those running short trains, did the same thing. See the link above for just one example

Could some kind soul make one of these and maybe post it here or TrainSim?

Most of the default (and older) MSTS freight equipment just uses a red light that shows on the last car of a moving train.

Most of the BLW/ZT passenger cars have rear lights on the gates, at least the more recent ones. For the sets with older cars (pre 1960), I will typically supply at least one car that has marker lamps attached to the sides of the car at the rear. For example, in the Monon 2 set, there is a coach and a baggage car or two that have an extra wag file that includes marker lamps.

Are you looking for something different??

My scanner is packed or I'd show it. At the link above about a third of the way down was one of the small varieties used for short moves. The would be hung on the collapsible gate, plugged in and then the brakeman was supposed to turn the oscillator on. It's hard to explain to anybody under about 50.

It's not marker lights since most modern cars had no brackets for them and no provision for electric markers. Her's the drill: Brakeman or conductor slides the pantograph gate (baby gate) out and latches it. Then he hangs the rear light on the gate, plugs it in and, if present, turns the oscillator on. He then shuts the door and locks it. The rear is now protected.

What you see from the rear is a moving rear red light about half way up the opening in the diaphragm if present.

That's the puppy! Are they built in to the model or are they an add-on?

They are built-in

The lighting section of the car shows the red light only if it is at the rear of the train.

I've checked several cars in the SP set and haven't found the light. Any clues?

It could be that Gaetan never added lights to that set, it is an older set.
