Super, Chief
Would be nice if one of these beauties showed up in the Amtrak SW Pack.

Hey David,
What's the history on these. As I understand it, they were rebuilds of E1As. How long did they last and where were they used?

Originally the Santa Fe had a few early E units from several orders, some as single A units and some as A+B units with the same number. Collectively these were referred to as E1, but they were not identical. These were back in the days of the Winton 201A.
In about 1953 the Santa Fe sent these to EMD and got back a like number of E8 units in a rebuilding which obviously included substantial new content.
The Santa Fe found the E unit to be less than ideal, but did find applications for them where grades were not an issue and the redundancy of twin prime movers could be useful, e.g. the El Pasoan, and the connections between Denver and La Junta.
After the 1967 train-offs there was quite a bit of surplus equipment and the E units dissappeared around 1969.
The Santa Fe also had some E6 units which were still around when E8m units arrived.
