"The Varsity" was a Monon passenger train in the early 1950s that shuttled students from four colleges along the line to Chicago on weekends. Benny Benoit has created a challenging activity for this train, and we hope to release it this week.

It should be noted that the Varsity operated Friday PM to Chicago, and Sunday PM from Chicago. 4 PM departure times. My May, 1953 Official Guide notes last trip was May 29 NB and May 31 SB. Equipment listed was Reclining Seat coaches and Grill Coach. Train Number 1 from Chicago and 2 from Bloomington. |

That's the one, Glenn. It only lasted a few years, IIRC, and only ran during the school year. The Monon catered to colleges right until the end of passenger service, the Thoroughbred was first cut back in the 60's to Chicago-Bloomington (had been Chicago-Louisville), then terminated altogether. When they were granted ICC permission to end Thoroughbred service, the Monon kept the train running until the end of the school year to accomodate college students. _________________ Rick Franzosa - ZosaTrains
