Actually it's not too much of a stretch. The first red "San Diego Trolley" line started running in 1980, using DuWag cars. Amtrak had started in 1971. So the era covered by these sets comes close to the era of the San Diego Trolley.

You got it right Dave, Amtrak 1971, federal money spent by the then illustrious president Lyndon B, Johnson. Trains of The Northeast Corridor by Tom Nelligan and Scott Hartley, superb story of the Beginning and creation of Amtrak.
