Hi Michael,
Conrail was split between CSX and NS in 1998. What your friend has photographed are probably ex-CR engines which are still wearing their CR blue liveries but have been "patched" and renumbered for CSX or NS (or which may have been acquired by other railroads).

There's a few short lines that picked up B23-7s, GP38s and various GP7/GP9 rebuilds from Conrail that didn't patch them. Though if they are actual CSX/NS locomotives, they are most certainly patched. I believe NS is down to 120 some-odd un-painted former Conrail locomotives, and CSX is down to 25 or so. It's a shame really, I miss Conrail. On NS it seems to be mostly SD60Is, C40-8Ws and a few GP38-2s that haven't been repainted. On CSX it's mostly GP38-2s/GP40-2s and SD50s. CSX was fast about repainting the C40-8Ws; most of those came on property with horribly faded paint, due to GE cutting corners and using a water-based paint instead of oil- based paint (AT&SF's Dash-8s shared a similar problem, hence why the red faded to pink.) Solid lash-ups of unpainted Conrail units are rare, but they can be found on NS, especially in south-western Pennsylvania where trios of SD60Is frequent coal trains. _________________ Thom |

Well with together 1202 miles (1934 km) Conrail still lives under jointed operation for their owners CSX & NS. Do they still wearing the original blue painting? |
