Wink Just read a new posting over at Train Sim Forum by Rick.....this looks to becoming a very colorful set of vintage Conrail power...liking what I see and I'm from the Midwest. Nice work Rick. Very Happy Skip

Looking forward to this. And freight cars would be great. You guys produce the best MSTS locomotives available but I really enjoy your freight cars as well. The C&O and Pennsylvania freight cars are especially nice.

Just curious: what did Conrail use the E8s for? Did it provide passenger service? I thought Amtrak had everything by the mid-70s.

True, while Amtrak was already up and running by then, Conrail still offered passenger service, namely on the North East Corridor, and some other commuter runs. (I think all the long-hauls were handed over to Amtrak.) All commuter operations had been transferred to Amtrak or private commuter companies by 1983.

Ultimately they kept three for use on their executive train. They were painted Pullman Green with delux gold lettering (hint hint hint).

When Conrail began operations in 1976, as part of the deal thay turned over the Northeast Corridor to Amtrak. So on Conrail 'day one' they had very little passenger service being operated on their own accounts. (One significant exception was the Cleveland - Youngstown commuter train on the former Erie, and Conrail filed a train-off petition almost immediately!) And yet on day one Conrail the biggest operator of passenger trains in the USA. How could that be?

By the time Conrail was formed the various states had already begun to cover the costs of providing commuter service. They were also rebuilding old equipment and buying new equipment. So on Conrail day one things didn't change that much. The equipment remained painted whatever the local operating agency wanted. Perhaps the old logos were removed, but there was no big repainting everything into Conrail.

Likewise on the Norhteast Corridor, Amtrak inherited their passenger train assets from the bankrupt Penn Central, but the logos and the paint went from being Penn Central (or PRR or NYC) to Amtrak.

The part where Conrail was involved was that the Engineer's and Conductors went from being employees of the various railroads to being employees of Conrail. You would see the Conrail logo on the paper stuff, for example on the commuter operations the tickets usually said Conrail.

But Conrail did not fit in well with the role of being the program agency for passenger train development, which is what many people expected them to be. (I know because I was there, but that goes beyond what we're discussing here.) So legislation was passed directing the commuter train operating agencies to begin running their own trains, that is with their own people doing the work, and not Conrail. This changeover took place in 1983. Also Amtrak took over being their own operator, eventually not just on the Northeast Corridor but everywhere they go.

So there really wasn't any such thing as "Conrail passenger service", and yet for a while they did it all!
