PostPosted: Sun Jan 04, 2009 11:15 pm    Post subject: Windows Vista and Alco Sounds Problem Reply with quote

Hi,

I just got a new computer that runs Windows Vista. My old machine had XP. I've been moving my BLW units over to the new machine but my Penn Central and N&W Alco C425's and C630's diesel engine sounds won't run on Vista, inside or out. The SP&S Alcos work on the Vista machine. Everything else (RS3, RS11, EMD's ) work fine on the Vista machine.

It's odd. I get bell and horn sounds inside and out but no diesel sounds on the new ( Vista ) machine. They run fine on the old ( XP ) computer.

I am not pleased with Vista. Is there any chance that this is related to all the bizarre "security" features in Vista? How can I fix the problem?

Thanks!

James

Gaetan,I read this thread with interest but it doesn't seem to be my problem. My MSTS sound slider are maxxed. Here's where I am at with the sound problems on your NW/PC C425's and C630's:I have no diesel engine sounds for either of these units inside the cab or out. I do have horn and bell sounds. All of my other BLW units ( and I have quite a few Wink  ) work fine. As I said in my other post, this issue came up when I got a new computer with Vista. I have managed to adjust some of the security seting on my Vista computer so it works better but it didn't fix the problem.I have the units on my old XP computer and they work fine. When I copy those files to my new Vista computer....I get the sound problem. I've tried reinstalling the files from a fresh download and no-go. Same problem. This is strange. It sure seems like it's A Vista Issue but it has me stumped. I really like the sounds you did for the PC and NW Centuries and wish I could get the darn things working.Appeciate any suggestions from anyone out there that has any.   Regards,James

Gaetan,

I was thinking about how to do this. I have your SP&S Alcos and the C425's and C636's work fine.

I have tried to copy the entire sound folder from the SP&S C425's to my N&W units but that doesn't seem to work.

Regards, James

Gaetan,

What, specifically , should I do to edit the .sms file ?

Could you possibly send me a copy of the N&W or PC eng.sms and cab.sms files that you know are "good" ?

Maybe I could just replace the ones I have with those but I have a suspicion that isn't going to do it because I copied my SP&S Sound folder ( which works fine on both my XP and Vista machines ) and pasted it into my N&W and PC folders on my Vista machine. That folder has the .sms files that "work'. I still have the same problem.

Did I need to edit the "good" .sms files ( from your SP&S Alcos ) in some way to make them work with the N&W/PC units?

I guess you can tell that messing with .sms files is new to me but I am interested to learn!

Regards,

James

Gaetan,

Sorry to take a bit to reply. I got busy. I did receive the file and I thank you. In the mean time I *finally figured out how to get the sounds back. I took a "good" .sms file from your SP&S Alcos and put it in the sound folder for the PC and NW units and changed the language in the .eng files to match and I have sound.

I don't know why this became an issue when I moved these units over to Vista but I am glad to have the sounds back because they are excellent.

Bring on the Alcos!

Regards,

James

PS: Any more Alcos in the works? Hope so. Wink
