Hello

In an attempt to keep things tidy in the Screenshots Forum, please use this thread for any comments about the non-graphical content.

Thanks

Hi

I didn't have a subwoofer when I did the sounds so yes, they are a bit heavy on the low end.

As for the strange RPM numbers, these sounds operate completely differently from normal MSTS sounds. All the sounds you hear are samples with no need to fake the speed change by varying the sample rate as normally used with MSTS.

Additionally, to get the sounds to follow the throttle without delay as much as possible, I needed instantaneous responses in the stream to a throttle change.

Roots blower? I'm pretty sure these locos had no turbo or supercharging. The generator did make a unique noise though and I think that might be what you're referring to.

Here are a couple of links for you and the community to check out, regarding the beloved F-unit; and my reference to Roots Blower!!!

Hi Ron

Thanks for the links . I guess the sound that I thought was generator whine is the Roots engine driven blower.

Never too old to learn, I wonder what I'll need to forget so I can remember this info Wink

Hi again Gary;
Glad the links were useful. As this is a promo unit, I am assuming it is like a beta version. Is there a way to change the exhaust sound to more of a bark than it's current throaty rumble? Other than that, everything is great as usual.

Hi

There are no plans by me to expand this product to other versions. I don't have a loco to record the needed inside and outside sounds from.

I did this as a proof-of-concept to see if a single sound stream could be used to produce realistic sounds. I used samples I had access to. Real recordings (with the 'bark') from both inside the cab and outside would be needed to do what you're asking for. My 'outside' engine sounds are just modified inside sounds.

If you have a source of loco sounds go ahead and use this method to get your 'bark'. Wink

Gary,

I noticed that the throttle notches (percent throttle at notch 1, 2, 3, etc) of the L&N F9's are different from Gaetan's previous F and E units. Has this been modified to better match the throttle position with the new sounds?

If I use the new sound for other models, would you recommend to modify the engine controller section in the .eng files in the same fashion?

BTW: I admit I never heard a F unit or E unit in real life, but I compared the new sound with the old one, and I like the new one much better. Smile

Hi

A "real" loco starts quite slowly in the first notch or two. These settings allow the sim to follow that power curve closer (IMHO).

To use these sounds you do need to modify the engine controller section or else you would need to change almost all the settings in the first stream of the sms files to have the sounds follow the throttle settings.

It's been a long time since I've heard an "E" of "F". Many years ago, I did spend many unofficial hours in or around baby brothers of that prime mover, 900HP SW's. These sounds are sort of based on those memories.

Hi Gary,

thank you for the information.

It should not be a problem to modify the engine controller sections on my (Gaetan's) F's and E's, I just wanted to be sure what to do before I start. Wink
