Installed the GPset & SD9 East set... no diesel smoke? Just sort of puffs out, almost invisible, am I missing something, or does it really look like this, Another GP (from WP3) shows smoke, steady stream. All engines running at 100% so it should be visually evident, right.
Thanks, ls trevithick |

You can change the visual appearance of the smoke cloud by adjusting the exhaust diameter in the ENG file. The BLW GP and SD models have the exhaust diameter set at 0.7. If you change this to a smaller value (0.4 for example) you will get a narrower, longer and probably more steady cloud of smoke.
The relevant part of the ENG files looks like this:
Exhaust1 (
0 4.81 -0.819
0 1 0
0.7
)
Exhaust2 (
0 4.81 -3.269
0 1 0
0.7
)
The exhaust diameter (two exhausts) is shown in orange. |

On a side note, in the real world, smoke amount and color varies greatly from locomotive to locomotive, even among locomotives from the same builder and model. Things like age, maintenance, fuel quality, engine load, atmospheric conditions, and how the engineer is running the locomotive(s) will affect smoke out put. MSTS does a mediocre job of handling exhaust from any form of locomotive, though Open Rails seems to be doing better and better as it's developed further. Hopefully, at some point, they'll figure out a way to represent heat shimmer from the exhaust and radiators, and a way that a locomotive's exhaust is much more pronounced when opening the throttle, then settles down or completely clears up when the engine sits in whatever throttle position.
